John Singer Sargent: Figures and Landscapes 1874-1882, Complete Paintings Volume IV This is probably the best Sargent book yet. It's huge (over 400 pages) and has excellent reproductions, many paintings I've never seen before, like the Octopi still life (genius). |

William Merritt Chase: Ronald G. Pisano Catalog Raisonne available April 24th 2006 This one is the first of a four volume Catalog Raisonne and covers Chase's pastel paintings and other works on paper. Books by this publisher (Yale University Press) usually have very high quality reproductions. Publishers description: This gorgeous book, the first of a four-volume definitive catalogue, features Chaseâ™s stunning paintings in pastel, which constitute a major and previously understudied body of work by the artist; monotypes; painted tiles and plates; watercolors; and prints. Reconstructing Chaseâ™s oeuvre is a daunting task, as the artist left few records of any kind, and no documentation of his individual works exists. Furthermore, Chaseâ™s paintings and pastels have been forged in great numbers throughout the years, and many of these works still surface on the art market. Making this long-awaited volume even more valuable is a list of every known exhibition of Chaseâ™s work during the artistâ™s lifetime, selected examples of major post-1917 exhibitions, and an essay on Chaseâ™s innovative pastel technique. |

The Art Spirit: Robert
Henri:
Within his treatise on art and its many facets, well-known
artist and teacher Robert Henri shares insight on the making and viewing
of art. He offers insight on areas which all artists must eventually
come to terms with, including proportion, technique, color, style, and
subject matter. He discloses a lifetime of his personal "life-lessons"
about his own art and his personal struggles as an artist, and he shares
honestly the perils and triumphs of both he and his students. In a mere
moment the reader learns lessons about art and its making which take
artists years to learn. This book is a joy in every sense of the word
â” from Henri's suggestions on rendering light reflecting from a
woman's lower lip to his secrets to making a portrait "glow". Henri's
The Art Spirit is a must-read for any reader interested in any aspect
of art. â”A classic. |

Practical Hints for Art Students: Charles Lasar
I just discovered this book through the new Beaux
book (Beaux studied with Lasar). Lasar was an American artist working
and teaching in France at the turn of the century. This book is difficult
to find but is usually inexpensive because nobody knows about it yet.
I'll try to get some images from this book up here soon, there is a
lot of good information in it. -Highly recommended
